We are thrilled to unveil the details behind the development of Media Events Radar (https://mediaeventsradar.net/), an innovative geopolitical intelligence, news, and logistical platform designed to enable journalists, newsrooms, researchers, and travelers to stay ahead of the news and monitor crucial events worldwide.

The pulse of the project lies in the continuous real-time monitoring of domestic media across dozens of countries (including local news agencies, newspapers, and public Telegram channels). However, the real magic happens under the hood, driven by an advanced backend architecture engineered for maximum performance.

The Tech Stack: Rust, Vector Postgres, and AI

To process a massive, real-time influx of heterogeneous data without compromising on speed or stability, we leveraged cutting-edge technologies that refuse to compromise on performance:

  • Rust for the Core & Scraping Engine: The entire integrated scraping system and core business logic are written in Rust. This language ensures flawless memory management, native parallelism to monitor hundreds of sources simultaneously, and blazing-fast execution speeds while keeping the infrastructure lightweight.

  • PostgreSQL + Vector Extension (pgvector): Raw data extracted from local media isn't just stored; it is processed through Artificial Intelligence models to be transformed into vectors (embeddings). Utilizing a PostgreSQL database optimized with vector extensions, the platform executes high-speed semantic and contextual searches.

  • Contextual Semantic Search with "Smart Filters": Forget traditional keyword matching. On Media Events Radar, we implemented intelligent semantic filters based on deep textual meaning. For example, by typing the theme "war", the contextual algorithm automatically surfaces related events like missile strikes, sanctions, or border clashes, even if the exact word "war" is entirely missing from the original source text.

Platform Capabilities: Key Features

Through a clean, highly responsive user interface, users can extract and interact with a vast amount of structured information:

  1. Unified Multi-Country Calendar: A single, constantly updating hub that aggregates upcoming public events categorized into over 12 distinct types (Domestic politics, Foreign policy, Economy, Security & Defense, Sports, Culture, Religion, Holidays, Science, Environment, etc.).

  2. Cross-Article Clustering ("Related" Events): News rarely breaks in isolation. The platform features an intelligent Related engine that scans the database to cluster correlated articles and cross-reference them with the same event. If multiple media outlets cover different angles of the same story (e.g., a registration deadline followed by the race itself, or an announcement followed by a secondary update), the system automatically links them together under a unified timeline.

  3. Community Interactivity & Moderation System: Media Events Radar isn't just a static dashboard; it includes a fully integrated community tier. Verified subscribers can engage directly via an on-platform Commenting System to discuss geopolitical developments, share local context, or provide updates. To support this, we engineered a comprehensive administration backend allowing for the seamless moderation of comments, ensuring high-quality, professional discussions and preventing spam.

  4. Geolocating & Mapping: Every event detected by local media is processed to extract geographical coordinates, paving the way for interactive map visualizations to understand exactly where events are unfolding.

  5. AI-Driven Confidence Score: Powered by our AI algorithms, the platform evaluates the reliability of data extraction and sources, displaying an accuracy percentage (Extraction Reliability) to minimize false positives or misinterpretations of complex articles.

  6. Real-Time Weather Integration: Connected to weather APIs (Open-Meteo), the platform pairs future events with the forecasted weather conditions for that specific date and precise location.

  7. Personal Briefings & Alerts: Users can sign up to receive tailored email digests covering the countries or topics they follow, alongside instant notifications for event updates (e.g., if an event is postponed, modified, or flagged as "cancelled" by the media).

  8. Calendar Synchronization (Google Calendar): Allows users to save any geopolitical or local event directly to their personal calendars with a single click.

Data Analytics & Insights

The platform goes beyond merely listing events by offering an advanced Insights section to track macroscopic trends:

  • Upcoming Event Volume: Weekly charts to monitor the density of events over time.

  • Most Active Sources: Immediate identification of which media outlets or channels are generating the highest volume of news in any given region.

  • Activity Heatmaps: Temporal heatmaps to spot the "hottest" days packed with institutional appointments, protests, or high-profile occurrences at a glance.
